Ripping off Santa
New York Times | Submitted by: Scrooge
"But for all his savvy in make-believe, Mr. Reiss said he still does not know how he, of all people, 76 years old and as sharp as a holly leaf, came to believe that his own fantasy had come true: that he had finally found a buyer who would preserve the theme park's integrity and allow him to keep playing Jack Jingle every Christmas season." Santa did find a con-man, however.

A wacky US military plan to defeat Iraq in the First Gulf War: "The Baghdad plan involved projecting a giant hologram over Iraq. This kind of projection requires a mirror behind it. The scale of the project dictated a mirror several kilometres across up in space. So far the largest mirror developed has been 30 metres wide and present versions are too small to produce a convincing image at ground level."

Coin World | Submitted by: HawaiianAtheist
The Famed 1933 Double Eagle which sold for $7.59 Million last July couldn't be considered a "Coin" only after a $20 Federal Reserve Note was used to "monetize" the coin. This little act has caused alot of trouble now for folks about the coins they have. When is a Coin, money?

Canoe | Submitted by: Ragin' Hardon
"A fragile ego and sexual humiliation explain why RCMP officer Jocelyn Hotte shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, a psychiatrist testified. After the couple broke up, Hotte and Gelinas participated in a threesome with one of her neighbours at a hotel in Laval, north of Montreal. Hotte... told the court he felt humiliated at one point because he overheard the two mocking him while he was trying to sleep." Perhaps he is that poor in bed.

US military seeking world's worst smell
Canton Repository | Submitted by: meatload
"Pamela Dalton has uncorked the foulest smell on Earth. Combining the worst of Bathroom Malodor and Who Me?, Stench Soup is so distasteful that it chases all thoughts out of the mind. Still, it is unclear whether odors could be "weaponized." The National Research Council panel wrote that it doesn't consider malodorants to be "chemical weapons," which are outlawed by international treaty."

Strange doings at the Cheney Ranch
Washington Post | Submitted by: uscfiend
One man thought the noise was a sonic boom. Another guessed he was hearing rolling thunder. When a woman feared it was a bomb or an earthquake, she called the police. But they had no answers, either. No one in the Massachusetts Avenue Heights neighborhood of Northwest Washington knows what is going on at the house of their neighbor, the vice president of the United States. But one thing is certain: They're tired of the daily blasting at the Naval Observatory that has shaken houses, rattled windows and knocked mirrors off the walls."

Bastard child of Union Jack and Swastika
The Scotsman | Submitted by: Honkey Kong
"The government-backed poster campaign, by the Union of Jewish Students, features a Union Flag split into four and rearranged to form the swastika symbol used by the German Nazi regime. The controversial image, which will also appear on beer mats (!?!!) in student unions across Britain, is being used by the UJS and the National Union of Students in a bid to stem a rising tide of racism and anti-Semitism among young people."

Stuff NZ | Submitted by: lemmiwinks
Evidence that led to Constable Keith Abbott being charged with murder came from four ex-policemen with chequered pasts. Pennefather was found to have problems with anxiety, anger and impulse control. Senior officers were also concerned Pennefather was using the carotid hold on offenders when there were less violent options - and his firearm was seized when police were called to a domestic problem at his home... CNN | Submitted by: Alaska Freegold
Sounds delicious: "Yu and his team collected food scraps from a restaurant and blended them with water to create a grimy, slurry mix. The concoction was stored in a warm, airtight container for a few weeks so that strains of bacteria that survive without oxygen would multiply." Newsday | Submitted by: Dirty Sammy
"About 3,000 women, mainly from the former Soviet Union, are sold each year into Israel's sex industry, which takes in about $1 billion annually, a parliamentary report said Sunday, slamming the country's justice system for being lax on punishments... Centre Daily | Submitted by: Meerkat
A more lengthy treatment of a story covered earlier: Finding of sunken Japanese sub proves the US Ward fired the first shots at Pearl Harbour, one hour before the attack. Curiously, the Ward's report was ignored by its headquarters in Honolulu. "It was a warning that could have changed history. "They were absolutely right," Wiltshire said. "They sounded the warning and no one listened."
